The increasing proportion of decentralized electricity generation is leading to numerous new challenges for electricity grids. Intelligent grids - smart grids - are helping to meet these challenges. For example, intelligent grid control systems can balance out fluctuating electricity generation from renewable energies and electricity consumption.
The central components of these electricity grids are the smart meters installed at the end consumer's premises. These meters and the free access to meter data for end consumers contribute to increasing energy efficiency and help to save electricity and resources.
